About a 45-minute drive north of Amsterdam exists the solitary seaport in Friesland. Formerly a lucrative whaling port, Harlingen is a town that thrives from seafood and dairy exports. It also serves as the naval gateway to the islands of Terschelling and Vlieland. I was immediately struck by the 17th century architecture and the intricate, operational vessels/homes that line the canals within the city center. It’s a very slow and boring, yet charming, dinky-ass place. It’s the sort of fairytale town that one would take their loved one for a weekend devoted to escaping reality. Where the locals greet you with heartfelt salutations and the fresh smell of ocean water makes you question, albeit briefly, why you choose to live in a metropolitan area…
